The deployed systems, a product of decades of innovation at Rafael in close collaboration with DDR&D, represent a significant leap forward in directed energy weaponry

In a historic technological milestone, the Israel Ministry of Defence (IMOD) has confirmed the successful field deployment of high-power laser interception systems during the ongoing Swords of Iron War. Developed by the Directorate of Defence Research & Development (DDR&D), the Israeli Air Force (IAF), and Rafael Advanced Defence Systems, these cutting-edge systems intercepted and neutralised multiple enemy threats, marking the first large-scale operational use of such laser technologies globally.

The deployed systems, a product of decades of innovation at Rafael in close collaboration with DDR&D, represent a significant leap forward in directed energy weaponry. Integrated into the IAF's Aerial Defence Array, the laser platforms achieved high interception rates, saving lives and shielding key national infrastructure from aerial threats.

These laser systems are part of Rafael’s broader directed energy weapons portfolio and serve as a complementary layer to the more powerful Iron Beam system. Currently in advanced stages of development, Iron Beam is expected to be delivered to the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) later this year.

Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Dr. Daniel Gold, Head of DDR&D, emphasised the historic nature of the deployment: “Israel is the first country in the world to operationally intercept threats on this scale using laser technology. This achievement is the result of years of intensive R&D and strong partnerships with industry and startups. The courage and professionalism of our forces enabled the first successful operational use of laser systems during wartime. The lessons learned will be crucial as we expand this capability.”

Laser interception technology will now become a key component of Israel’s multi-layered air defence architecture, enhancing protection across air, sea, and land. This milestone underscores Israel’s leadership in defence innovation and its commitment to transforming visionary technologies into operational realities.
