It aims to shape future peacebuilding models amid today’s increasingly fragmented geopolitical landscape

More than 400 participants from over 70 countries convened in Sweden’s capital for the 12th annual Stockholm Forum on Peace and Development, launched under the theme “The Future of Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding.” Co-hosted with over 70 partner organisations, the 2025 Forum features 46 sessions aimed at fostering inclusive dialogue and innovative solutions in a rapidly shifting global order.

Opening the Forum, Stefan Löfven, Chair of the SIPRI Governing Board, emphasised the need for open and transformative dialogue amid growing global tensions. “The tectonic plates of geopolitics are moving under our feet,” he said, calling the Forum a vital space for new thinking.

Helen Eduards, Director-General for International Development Cooperation at the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, raised concerns over dwindling development aid, urging that limited resources be channelled to those most in need.

A key panel titled “Shifting Powers: Rethinking Peace and the Future of Security” addressed rising power rivalries, ballooning defence spending, and the erosion of global norms. Speakers highlighted the urgency of adopting community-based approaches, reinvigorating multilateralism, and prioritising prevention over reaction.

As the Forum unfolds, it aims to shape future peacebuilding models amid today’s increasingly fragmented geopolitical landscape.
