On 3 June, local time, 25 members of the 15th Chinese Peacekeeping Horizontal Engineering Company, part of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), were deployed to the Aweil base to carry out critical engineering support operations, according to Xinhua News Agency.
Their responsibilities include the construction of an airport runway, shelters, an ammunition depot, as well as ground hardening and the installation of a drainage system, all aimed at enhancing operational infrastructure at the site.
With this deployment, Chinese peacekeepers are now active across four locations in South Sudan: Wau, Kuajok, Romich, and Aweil. The Chinese engineering contingent has so far repaired a total of 251 kilometres of roads across the states of Western Bahr el Ghazal, Warrap, and Unity, significantly improving accessibility and mobility for UNMISS operations.
The contingent’s ongoing efforts underscore China’s sustained commitment to peacekeeping missions and the rebuilding of essential infrastructure in conflict-affected regions.
